Jimmy Hamilton & St. Croix

Below is the review from the St. Croix Avis for one of

the three concerts we played along with the Gary Burton Quartet:

Below are Bassist/Alto Saxophonist, Jeff Bergstrom and I at his beautiful home on Blue Mountain, St. Croix.  Jeff was the bassist on the St. John's concert and on many gigs with the Jimmy Hamilton Quartet. Jeff  also built and ran a great little recording studio called "Blue Sky Studios" where we recorded and produced many great musical projects.  You will find Jeff's name on the personnel list of the Cab Calloway concert on my bio page.  Later, after Hurricane Hugo, Jimmy called Jeff to join his group as a saxophonist.  Jeff performed with him until his passing and played "Young Man With A Horn" (one of Jimmy's favorites) on the alto saxophone at the burial ceremonies in The Botanical Gardens on St. Croix.  Jeff's wife, Sherry is a Ju-Jit-Su Sensei (a student of Gerard Patalidis' and other great martial artists) who has taken over the teaching of that art since Gerard's passing.

Leo Dupuis on Chromatic Harmonica with me on a Jam session in Fredericksted, STX.  August 1987.  It was at least 110 degrees that day. My shirt was so soaked that it wouldn't stay buttoned, no matter how many times I tried.

These two shots are just for fun.  I spent a day in 1986 helping to remove debris from the beach at "Grassy Point" on the south shore of St. Croix (not far from Grapetree Bay, where the photos on pg.1 were taken).

The poster below is from the first St. Croix Jazz Festival in October of 1980.  Charlie Rouse came to visit Jimmy Hamilton for over a week and was sitting in on our gig on Friday October, 9th, the night my daughter Starla was born.  Actually, she was born after midnight on the 10th. Coincidentally, that is Thelonius Monk's birthday as well.  During the day on Saturday Charlie called Monk and let me wish him happy birthday. Monk congratulated me on Starla's birth, as well, and we had a short but pleasant telephone conversation.  It was at that very memorable moment, that Charlie signed this poster to Starla.  Both my great friend, Allen Youngblood and I played piano on the concert with Jimmy Hamilton and Charlie Rouse the following day.

The photo below is a typical sight around the Botanical Gardens Area,

where the above mentioned concert was performed.

This Autograph is from an amazing moment when I first met Lucille Armstrong.

She was a beautiful and charming woman, with an outstanding wit.

Below are Cab Calloway and his cast's Bios from the concert program in 1987.

Below Are The Key Elements Of The "Carlos I" Flyer (incorrectly advertising a Septet instead of a Quartet) from the week that I performed there with Jimmy in 1990. (I'm so glad I asked him to autograph it.)

Below is Jimmy's obituary from the New York Times
